If you have some level of Physical Therapy qualifications, you can provide valuable support and training to both healthcare workers and the families of people affected by HIV and participate in Youth Life Skills clubs in educational institutions and out of school youth programs. As a Physical Therapy volunteer you’ll work alongside medical personnel who will provide advice, healthcare and education to families living with HIV. The scheme is a highly progressive project that aims to increase people’s knowledge and understanding of the disease, and provide practical physical care to terminally ill children and adults. During the mornings you’ll usually travel around the community carrying out home-based care alongside a small team of local staff. You’ll visit families in their homes, treating common illnesses faced by patients such as malaria, cough, and skin infections among others. You’ll help to carry out and explain simple exercises to family members to enable them to keep them up until your next visit. Afternoons will frequently be spent working alongside the local physical therapy staff, passing on your skills and knowledge. keep in mind that though skills are important, a sincere willingness to learn and work is often required to make a valuable contribution.
To be considered for the internship program you must be a university or graduate student including medical electives and pre-university. Background in a field complementary to our work such as medicine, global/community health, elementary education, childhood development, etc. is preferred but not required.
